The community of Depoe Bay, Oregon
Depoe Bay...There be whales out there!
The city of Depoe Bay claims to have the world's smallest harbor.
It is also known as Depoe Bay, and the community is clustered closley around
it. The bay is on the inland side of the Coast Highway, with a small outlet
to the ocean over which a landmark arch bridge has been built. The well protected
bay provides a heaven during even the most energetic storms. A well
maintained Coast Guard Station is also located here.
Visitors to this small city can enjoy many coastal activities, beach combing
to charter boat fishing. But the most exciting is watching for whales during
their seasonal migrations from the Bearing Strait to Baja and back.
The appearance of Grey Whales along the Oregon Coast attracts knowledgeable
watchers from all over the country. Generally, whales can be seen from
December through May.
